Sport as a Bridge for integration and Diversity

9. June 2025
From Nora Steiner

What can sport truly achieve? This question lies at the heart of a special evening during the United Summer Camp 2025. On June 12th at 6 PM at Bern’s Wankdorf Stadium, the Coubertin meets Dunant Foundation invites you to an inspiring Sport Talk featuring two outstanding figures from international football: Diego Benaglio, former Swiss national team goalkeeper and VfL Wolfsburg legend, and Almuth Schult, Olympic champion and one of the leading voices in German women’s football.
Together with Regula Mader, Deputy Director for Immigration and Integration at the State Secretariat for Migration (SEM), Stefan Leutwyler, Head of Sports Policy and Legal Affairs at the Federal Office of Sport (BASPO), Swiss sports pioneer Béatrice von Siebenthal, and Reto Ammann, President of the Coubertin meets Dunant Board, they will discuss the topic:
“Building Bridges from the Field to Society – Sport for Integration and Diversity.”
The evening powerfully demonstrates how sport can become a driving force for integration. At the center are young women who fled Afghanistan, now recognized refugees living across Europe – who have found new stability, connection, and hope in their new homes through football. What unites them is a deep passion for sport that carried them through the hardest times.
The Sport Talk makes clear:
Integration is not achieved by words alone, but through lived experiences and genuine encounters. Supporting a person’s passion builds self-confidence, dignity—and opens the door to a fulfilling life. Football becomes a place where hope, belonging, and new dreams can grow.

Be part of this special evening.
Let yourself be moved—by stories that touch the heart and voices that take responsibility.
